Mannequin Challenge

When Mrs. Kostiuk and Mrs. MacLeod attended the Google Summit last weekend in Victoria we were excited to participate in the Mannequin Challenge. You can spot Mrs. MacLeod’s blond hair near the front row close to the stage at the beginning of the video.

This week the grade 3’s decided to try out the Mannequin Challenge during Frolicking Friday!

We enjoyed taking some time to enjoy the fresh snow over at our neighbourhood park!

What is your favourite thing to do in the snow?

Tell me about something you are excited to do this winter!

Learning Computer Language

Today we started to learn how to code using the Code Studio! You can find the link under our Learning Links tab at the top. This year our class received a grant from SET-BC for technology in our classroom to help us learn how to code. We were very excited to get started 🙂

What is the language of computers called?

What do you think we can do when we learn how to code?

Scratch

We are learning how to code!!! We started practicing on Studio Code by using tutorials to code Angry Birds to learn how to make them move in a game. This week we got to go on the program, Scratch.

After taking some tutorials to learn what Scratch can do, we got to code our very own Ping Pong games! Check out Ty’s:

By using Scratch to code his game, Ty chose the background, the objects, the sounds, and how the score works. Great job, Ty! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the class creates 🙂

What do you think about Scratch?

How is your Ping Pong game coming along?

Students can check out and read thousands of books on this app, rate and recommend books to their friends. Each student gets a personalized library to browse. Books can also be read to the student using this app.

Which books have you read on Epic?

How do you think we can use this app in our class?

If you haven’t tried Epic yet, which books do you like to read in our classroom or library?

Multiplication Time!

We are very excited to be learning all about multiplication! This week we have focused on the 2 and 3 times tables. We have been using the fun site, Mathletics, and have a free 2-week trial with it. This week and next week students can click on the link and log-in. Usernames and passwords were sent home in planners.

Here are a couple of videos to help us learn the 2 and 3 times tables. Thanks to Mrs. Sharpe for finding these fun songs!

What multiplication tricks have you learned so far?
What do you think about Mathletics?

Adventure through the History of Educational Technology

Wow, that’s a long title! Mrs. Kostiuk is going back to school to get her Master’s degree this year and for a group project she got to make a website with her partners! This website was geared towards grade 3 students. Check it out 🙂

Adventure through the History of Educational Technology

Here are some pictures of us trying out the first activity in Task 1. This showed us how the Printing Press changed the amount of books that could be made!

Which was faster – printing or stamping?

What is an example of technology from the site?

Which technology did you find the most interesting and why?

Store Commercials

We are learning about money in math and what better way to understand how to use it than to create our own stores! We each came up with a store, created 5-10 items, and then sold them to our classmates using the paper money we had. Check out the commercials we made to promote our stores:

We sure had fun during our Awesome Mall Shop!
