Flora the Wolf

We had an exciting visit from the Northern Lights Wolf Centre today. If you follow our blog you would see that Flora the wolf visited us a few years ago, too! We loved learning about wolves and seeing Flora today. We even got to play a fun wolf game called “Flora Says”!

What did you learn about wolves?

Why are wolves important to have in our forests? What would happen if they weren’t there?

Grow Plants Grow!

Our science fair is coming up this Thursday, June 2 from 9am-1pm!

Students have been busy watering their plants, making observations, preparing their science boards, and baking up a storm in the kitchen. We can’t wait for Thursday!

What are you making for the science fair?

What has been your favourite part of your science fair project so far?

SunMine Tour

If you have been following our blog this year you would see all of the learning and exploring we have done on solar energy. This week we had the opportunity to visit our community’s SunMine. It was so cool to see the solar panels in person! A big thanks to Mrs. Sharpe for organizing the trip and to Mr. Sommerville for telling us all about this exciting project!

Our Special Spots

Almost every Friday this year we have been going out on Frolicking Friday to enjoy the outdoors and further develop our love and fascination with nature. Before spring break many of us picked a special spot down in the gully by our school. This week students went back to this spot with their nature journal.

We also found a meeting spot for the grade 3’s every time we go down into the gully.

Although spring weather is here now, there is still snow down in the gully. There was lots of ice on the pathway, so we gathered dried pine needles to spread on the ice so that it was easier to walk on the trail. Great work, Grade 3’s!

Describe your special spot. What do you like about it?

Fundraising for a Solar Panel

As part of our Green Games focus on solar energy this year, our school is also fundraising to buy a solar panel for our greenhouse. Our grade 3’s use the greenhouse lots in the spring to begin growing our science fair projects and the solar panel will help power a heater to keep our plants warm.

We already got a twitter response within minutes of Mrs. Kostiuk posting the above – wahoo!

Last week we got a special visit from our mayor to tell us all about our SunMine.

Start thinking about your science fair project. What would you like to grow in the greenhouse?

Solar Energy

Our whole K-3 school has been learning about solar energy this month. Tonight we are hosting a POPS (Parents of Primary Students) Night at our school to show off our learning. The night will have a nonfiction focus and each classroom will have different activities. Our class will be featuring the solar ovens that each student has made. We roasted some tasty s’mores on Monday and hope to do another snack again before they go home!

Watch these videos and then comment in the padlet below! Click for Sun song: I’m So Hot! and Frank the Photon.

What does nonfiction mean?

How did your solar oven work? Did you do anything to improve it?

The Titanic

Our classmate, Justin, has been working on a special project during Choice time – the Titanic! Justin was really interested about researching the Titanic and decided to make a model as he learned about it.
