Musical Patterns

We have been learning about patterns in Math and today we got to create musical patterns. After checking out all of the fun the grade 3’s at our neighbouring school had creating musical patterns, we decided to make some of our own! Thanks for the idea, Mrs. Hammond and Ms. Sharpe! Check out their blogs to see what the other grade 3’s have been learning :).

Below is a playlist of musical patterns created in our class today.

What type of pattern did you create?

Which instruments did you use?

We’re A Couple of Misfits

It’s getting to be that time of year where we start practicing for our school Christmas Concert! This year our concert will be centered around Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!

Our class will be performing the song, We’re A Couple of Misfits”Here is a recording of Mrs. Haggard singing our song and Miss Trish playing the piano. You can sing along with the lyrics below!

We’re a couple of misfits
We’re a couple of misfits
What’s the matter with misfits?
That’s where we fit in!

We’re not daffy and dilly
Don’t go ’round willy nilly
Seems to us kinda silly
That we don’t fit in.

We may be different from the rest
Who decides the test?
Of what is really best?

We’re a couple of misfits
We’re a couple of misfits
What’s the matter with misfits?
That’s where we fit in!

Why am I such a misfit?
I am not just a nit wit!
I’m an adorable reindeer
Why don’t I fit in?

Why am I such a misfit?
I am not just a nit wit!
They can’t fire me.
I QUIT!

We may be different from the rest
Who decides the test
Of what is really best?

We’re a couple of misfits
We’re a couple of misfits
What’s the matter with misfits?
That’s where we fit in!

My Pedagogy

Pedagogy is the science and art of education. Here is a collection of some of my personal highlights over the past two years at our school. I am so pleased to be back at our school again in the fall :)!

Recorder Karate

This year in our recorder unit, we did Recorder Karate. Students moved through different levels of songs, receiving a “belt” for every song they mastered. Now, recorders have been sent home. Students can continue to practice songs at home and can bring them to school to play for Mrs. Kostiuk during Choice time to try and earn more belts. Here is the sheet music for the songs:

Is Somebody Singing?

Music Monday is quickly approaching!

We will be meeting in the Platzl on Monday, May 5 to begin singing “I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing)” at 11:00am, along with hundreds of schools across Canada and Chris Hadfield!

Check out a video of us performing the song last year and you can practice at home this weekend :). You can find the lyrics under Learning Links.

Here are some guitars we created this week to celebrate music.

Earth Walk 2014

This Friday our school and the other K-3 school in our area set out to meet at a park. Over the past few weeks we have been busy sanding, oiling, and decorating our own walking sticks – they are beautiful! We had a great walk to the park and filmed along the way with our LearnPads.

We also sang a song for Mr. A. that fits in with Earth Day. We sang and did sign language to “Colours of the Wind” while Ms. Trish played on the piano. I hope to upload a video of it soon!

One Day

Today is Pink Shirt Day and what an amazing day it was!

Students in our school brainstormed words that represented Pink Shirt Day to them, and then we were able to create these tshirts with their words!

We surprised everyone at our assembly with our performance to the song, “One Day”.

Next, we snuck down to the middle school in town to show them our flashmob to celebrate Pink Shirt Day.

Flash2

In class we have been reading the story, “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” by Madonna.

Today we made our own pillows by sewing fleece.

Next, we regretfully took a pair of scissors and cut a hole in our beautiful pillows.

Although we were sorry, we could not take back what we did.

We could, however, stitch them up as best we could.

How does the story of “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” relate to Pink Shirt Day?
What was your favourite part about Pink Shirt Day this year?

Kindness Boomerang

Since the beginning of the school year we have talked about Respect. We have had discussions in our classroom and with our school counsellor, Mrs. Neil, read stories like “Hey Little Ant”, created artwork, and watched videos like the Kindness Boomerang:

And now, in February, we will once again be celebrating Pink Shirt Day. Check back soon to see how we will be inspired this year ;).

What is the kindness boomerang about?

Why should we celebrate Pink Shirt Day?

How does respect relate to Pink Shirt Day?
