This year our card art was inspired by the Northern Lights! Students created a winter scene using silhouettes. Here are a few samples.
Card orders are due tomorrow, November 26!
We have finally finished our novel, Silverwing! We really enjoyed learning about bats. Here is a collection of different points of view we saw throughout the story.
What was your favourite part of Silverwing?
Are you excited about the new novel we started reading in class today?
It’s getting to be that time of year where we start practicing for our school Christmas Concert! This year our concert will be centered around Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!
Our class will be performing the song, “We’re A Couple of Misfits”. Here is a recording of Mrs. Haggard singing our song and Miss Trish playing the piano. You can sing along with the lyrics below!
We’re a couple of misfits
We’re a couple of misfits
What’s the matter with misfits?
That’s where we fit in!
We’re not daffy and dilly
Don’t go ’round willy nilly
Seems to us kinda silly
That we don’t fit in.
We may be different from the rest
Who decides the test?
Of what is really best?
We’re a couple of misfits
We’re a couple of misfits
What’s the matter with misfits?
That’s where we fit in!
Why am I such a misfit?
I am not just a nit wit!
I’m an adorable reindeer
Why don’t I fit in?
Why am I such a misfit?
I am not just a nit wit!
They can’t fire me.
I QUIT!
We may be different from the rest
Who decides the test
Of what is really best?
We’re a couple of misfits
We’re a couple of misfits
What’s the matter with misfits?
That’s where we fit in!
Every year our school hosts a Ten Thousand Villages sale. Our class and Mrs. Sharpe’s class host a pre-sale tea. We invite our senior friends and serve them tea and cookies that we have made while they browse the beautiful handmade items from around the world. This is also a time for students to share their knowledge about fair trade.
What countries did some of the items come from?
What is fair trade?
We are learning about time in our Math class right now. We have been focussing on learning to read analog clocks. Last week we made our own clocks out of paper that we can move around:
Here are pictures of our class creating a giant life-size clock:
What time did you and your partner show? What happens at that time?
Today is Remembrance Day. We had our assembly yesterday and our class did very well presenting I Have the Right to Be a Child by Aurélia Fronty.
We have been talking a lot about our rights and freedoms that we are so lucky to have here in Canada.
We also had a chance to talk about animals in war. Students received a newspaper to check out some interesting Tales of Animals in War.
What right or freedom is most meaningful to you?
Why are we so lucky to live in Canada?
Yesterday our class learned about a fascinating artist: Andy Goldsworthy.
Much of Andy’s art focuses on lines or circles. Which piece do you like the best? Why?
How does Andy create his art? Does he make a plan before he goes out?
Where does Andy create his art?
We were so inspired as we learned about this artist, we decided to go outside and try out Andy’s process for ourselves!
A big Thank You to Ms. Yu for coming in to help us learn about Andy Goldsworthy’s work!
Today Batty Patty came to our class! We got to see some pretty neat bat photos, play some bat games and activities, as well as learn some new bat facts.
How many times can a bat flap its wings in one second?
What did you learn about flying fox bats? Is there just one kind? How big can their wingspan be?
What do insect-eating bats use to find their food? How can you tell the difference between an insect-eating bat and a fruit-eating bat?
How many bats can fit in the bat house Patty showed us?
What can we do to help bats?
This summer, Leah’s mom and dad found a bat clinging to a wall outside of their pharmacy. Wanting to make sure the bat didn’t get hurt, they called Batty Patty to come and help. Here is a picture of the bat that was outside of their store!
How did Patty help the bat? Why couldn’t she use her bare hands?
